Title: Testing Wisconsin Asphalt Mixtures for the AASHTO 2002 Mechanistic Design Procedure
PI: R. Christopher Williams
Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering
Iowa State University
Project: AASHTO's newest design guide for asphalt mixes became available in January. The 2002 Mechanistic Design Procedure employs the use of new performance testing measures of mixture resistance to rutting and fatigue cracking. The objective of this study is to evaluate Wisconsin asphalt mixtures with the new mechanistic performance test to determine the feasibility of the new design guide for WisDOT. Tasks entail creating a database of mechanical properties of common Wisconsin mixtures, and evaluating the tests.
Task List:
  1. Literature Review
  2. Development of Research Plan and Materials Collection
  3. Laboratory Testing of Specimens
  4. Analysis of Laboratory Data and the Feasibility of the Simple Performance Test for Use in Mix Design and QC/QA Activities.
  5. Interim Report
  6. Simulation of AASHTO Pavement Design Guide Utilizing Laboratory Data
  7. Development of Library Values for Inclusion in the AASHTO 2002 pavement Design Guide for Wisconsin DOT
  8. Final Report
Start Date: April 2, 2004
End Date: October 2, 2005
Extension: February 10, 2007, July 31, 2007, September 30, 2007
Project Award: $125,000
