Title: Investigation of Standard Penetration Torque Testing (SPT-T) to Predict Pile Performance
PI: Alan Wagner
Wagner Komurka Geotechnical Group, Inc.
Project: A recent WisDOT research project (0092-00-14) recommended the Standard Penetration Torque field test (SPT-T) as the most promising method for estimating pile setup (the increase in pile capacity that occurs over time) in the design stage of a project. If a strong correlation can be found between this field test and actual pile performance, WisDOT can use future test results to evaluate setup and incorporate it in the design of a project, which will result in the potential shortening of piles and the corresponding reduction in foundation costs. The objective of this research is to determine if strong correlations exist between the SPT-T test and existing field pile setup records and to develop standardized SPT-T test procedures and equipment recommendations. Tasks include literature review, equipment acquisition and field-testing, and analysis of test and field data.
