Project: One of the WisDOT-identified subgrade improvement methods entails the stabilization of soft subgrade soils by the incorporation of fly ash. Promising performance on two experimental sections in Wisconsin, combined with success in several other states, suggest the need for a more rigorous evaluation of the performance of fly ash-enhanced subgrades in Wisconsin. The objective of this study is to evaluate a 3-5 mile section of roadway that will be built in 2004 with fly-ash subgrade stabilization, and to compare its performance to control sections using conventional subgrade improvement methods. Investigators will develop laboratory tests and field monitoring procedures, instrumentation and data collection procedures during construction, and monitor performance over a 30-month period.
