Title: Determination of Shear Strength Values for Granular Backfill Materials Used by Wisconsin DOT
PI: Tuncer Edil
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Project: This study will determine the correlation of various properties and conditions to the friction angle values. Investigation will also determine the variation in these values and recommend allowable design values for the various materials commonly used for backfill for walls and reinforced slopes.
Task List: Phase 1 - Review of Physical Provinces and Sampling
  1. Initial AASHTO Requirements Testing
  2. Detailed Sample Characterization Testing
  3. Shear Strength Testing
Phase 2 - Analysis and Interpretations
Start Date: September 1, 2004
End Date: August 31 , 2006
Extension: March 31, 2007, August 30, 2007
Project Award: $99,901
