Title: Expanded Study on the Effects of Aggregate Coating and Films on Concrete Performance
PI: Steven M. Cramer
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
University of Wisconsin-Madison
Project: An earlier WisDOT study (0092-00 -07) of limited sample size identified certain Wisconsin aggregate coatings that could negatively impact pavement durability. This expanded study will assemble a larger sample size to improve understanding of the impact of coatings and how to minimize that impact. The objectives are to develop a statewide database on aggregate cleanliness and source; identify and verify conditions and locations with unsuitable aggregate cleanliness levels; further test such aggregates to identify coatings, test concrete made from such aggregate, and research methods for detection of deleterious coatings.
Task List:
  1. Establish a list of properties/criteria needed for a database on course aggregate cleanness in the state
  2. Update our relevant literature data on aggregate cleanness
  3. Monitor the WisDOT database of aggregate cleanness based on criteria established in Task 1
  4. As aggregates are identified that do not meet the proposed criteria, we will conduct follow-on tests to confirm the screening outcome
  5. Once it is confirmed that the aggregates do not meet the proposed criteria, we will obtain additional aggregates to allow for concrete tests to establish the effect of aggregate coating
  6. Characterize the aggregate coating with additional testing
  7. Perform laboratory concrete batching and testing of plastic and hardened concrete
  8. Report the results of the expanded study
