WHRP's goals

  • Address the most critical problems by measuring urgency, strategic value of needed research, potential usefulness of findings and ultimate return on investment.
  • Develop performance measures that can be used to predict and validate highway quality by establishing performance tests, prediction models, acceptance criteria, construction factors and performance-based specifications.
  • Reduce life-cycle costs while improving highway performance and sustainability by investigating promising new design and construction methods.

Accomplishments in WHRP's first 10 years

  • More than 60 research projects were completed.
  • 28 percent of projects have been implemented.
  • WHRP research resulted in numerous specification changes.
  • WHRP has provided critical support to the adoption of AASHTO’s Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide.
